Academic background

My research is focusing on the relationship between architecture and urbanism; I am interested in social behaviour activities, their mutual effect on both spatial and economic variables in urban spaces, and their interrelationship with architectural design using digital simulation in forecasting their movements and behaviour. I have developed and planned an area of personal research, which is reflected in my several published papers in refereed journals and international refereed conferences, in addition to the work of my postgraduate research M.Arch and Ph.D students, whom I supervise. I have participated as a member of a research team in funding research. In addition, over the past seven years I have contributed effectively to the research community by being a peer-reviewer for a number of international academic journals and conferences. I am holding two Ph.D degrees, the recent PhD is from the University of Liverpool, School of Architecture, UK.

With regards to my teaching experience, I have worked for a number of distinguished universities in three different countries, with the most two recent universities being outside my homeland of Egypt: the United Arab Emirates University (ABET accredited) in the UAE, and Beirut Arab University (RIBA Part I and Part II accredited) in Lebanon. Over the past seventeen years of teaching experience, I have gained an understanding of dealing with multinational and multicultural environments. I have shown my ability to handle various teaching and research tasks, including communicating with graduate and undergraduate architecture students in design studios and lecture settings, and using my graphical skills – of which I have both state of the art digital computer skills and freehand capabilities – which help me to deliver my ideas to the students effectively. I have added and enhanced a number of teaching modules in my current university, introducing more digital design concepts and simulation software. In addition, I have worked collaboratively with faculty and corporate partners, along with public participants, in real-life-situation research tasks. I consider myself highly adaptive and cooperative, with a good team spirit and excellent communication in team-work environments. I have shown myself as able to establish strong teacher-student relationships, a skill gained through prolonged teaching experience. Recently, I am using ‘Design-Build’ method in post-graduate design studios to involve the students more with the construction industry (digitally and traditionally). My teaching method depends on ‘student base learning’, which involves the students in teaching, discussing and researching the needed information.

I have more than seven years of administrative experience as the founding Chair and the Head of Faculty branch of Architecture- Design & Built Environment in a newly established branch in Tripoli campus- Beirut Arab University, experiencing leadership at first hand. I am responsible for a team of more than 40 faculty members and staff, in addition to more than 220 Architectural students, 40 Interior design students, setting day-to-day and yearly plans for various tasks and activities. Under my administration, my faculty branch is currently validated for RIBA Part I and Part II for Tripoli Campus (an unconditioned validation for five years). The initial visit was in March 2017 and we were candidate for validation, and achieved the final validation in the full board visit in May 2018.
